Principal Tuba of the Bavarian State Orchestra at the Bavarian State Opera
Steffen Schmid, born in 1988 in southern Palatinate, started playing the tuba at the age of ten. He studied in Saarbrücken and Stuttgart with Prof. Ralf Rudolph, Prof. Stefan Heimann, and Stefan Ambrosius, graduating with distinction in 2013. Further studies took him to Prof. Andreas Hofmeir at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Since the 2011/12 season, he has been the principal tuba of the Bavarian State Orchestra. He has been a guest with the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra in 2017 and 2019. He is also a member of OperaBrass and regularly performs with German Brass. As a soloist, he has performed with the Kurpfalzphilharmonie Heidelberg and the Rhineland-Palatinate Youth Wind Orchestra. In 2016, he received a scholarship from the German Music Competition.
